Supreme Court Temporarily Blocks Texas Immigration Law

The order pauses the controversial law’s enactment until March 13.

A day after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay that would have allowed Texas to enact its contested border security law, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito signed an order that blocks it until March 13. The state is ordered to respond the the Justice Department’s request for a pause by March 11.

When he signed it, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said of the law, “It creates a criminal offense for illegal entry into Texas from a foreign nation for repeat offenders, that creates the events of illegal reentry with a potential prison sentence term of up to 20 years.” The governor noted, “The bill provides a mechanism to order an illegal immigrant to return to the foreign nation from which they entered.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the justices of the Supreme Court as they consider and issue orders regarding federal and state laws.
  • For Texas state officials to be discerning in their attempts to secure the border.
  • For U.S. border agents as they seek to ensure the safety of both U.S. citizens and migrants.
